RAEL'S COMMENT: This is a great decision that should be applied worldwide and lowered even more, to 14 at least. Young people are much more concerned about political decisions that affect our future environment than old people, who don't really care since they have just a few years left to live. At the same time, the voting right should be removed from people whose illness render them unable to make decisions, such as the mentally retarded, older people with Alzheimers or other degenerative diseases that render them unable to decide even simple things in their lives, etc. It's shocking to see that families or even nurses vote for these people. A long time ago, when  selfishness, nationalism, competition and greed weren't ruling the world, elder councils were making good decisions. Such people don't exist anymore. The elder councils of the past should be replaced with “youngster councils" made up of young people, who are not yet tainted by egoism, selfishness, nationalism and competition, and who have a much better vision of what the future world should be.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Critics say President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is trying to get more votes
  • Supporters say the measure gives young people more chances to participate in politics
  • Lawmaker: "Reality indicates that the participation of young people is increasing"
  • Students are split over the proposed measure
Buenos Aires (CNN) -- Argentinian lawmakers passed a new measure Wednesday lowering the nation's voting age to 16.
Representatives in the South American country's lower house overwhelmingly voted in favor of the law Wednesday. A majority of senators approved it last week.
The move to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 comes a year before a key mid-term election in Argentina, and some critics have said it's an attempt by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and her party to garner more votes.
But supporters of the measure say it will give young people more opportunities to participate in politics.
"I think it's important that the law reflects reality," said Rep. Hector Recalde of the Victory Front party. "Reality indicates that the participation of young people is increasing in our country. It's good that it's this way."
Rep. Eduardo Amadeo of the Peronist Front party offered a more cynical take on the nation's youth.
"If you ask me what is the worst social problem in Argentina, it is the youth. Education is worse. The consumption of drugs is worse. Employment is worse. Things like teen pregnancy, they are much worse than they were at the beginning of this government, and now the government has discovered them and they say, we are going to vote," he said.
Nahuel Armando, a student in Buenos Aires, said lowering the voting age would be a positive move.
"I think that any person who thinks he's capable and who has criteria to vote should do it. I think there are a lot of people in the last few years who have gotten interested," he said.
But Santiago Tricario, another student, said he was worried political campaigns would interfere with education.
"We are worrying about studies, and once we leave here, we can worry about other things. Read about politics or something else, work," he said. "That's why I think personally that it would be better if it were left to people who are over 18 to vote."
With the measure's passage, nearly 1.5 million Argentinians between 16 and 18 years old will be added to voting rolls.
The new rules will apply in next year's mid-term elections, when half of the seats in the nation's house, or Chamber of Deputies, and a third of the seats in the Senate will be at stake.

WARNING FROM RAEL: For those who don't use their intelligence at its full capacity, the label "selected by RAEL" on some articles does not mean that I agree with their content or support it. "Selected by RAEL" means that I believe it is important for the people of this planet to know about what people think or do, even when what they think or do is completely stupid and against our philosophy. When I selected articles in the past about stupid Christian fundamentalists in America praying for rain, I am sure no Rael-Science reader was stupid enough to believe that I was supporting praying to change the weather. So, when I select articles which are in favor of drugs, anti-semitic, anti-Jewish, racist, revisionist, or inciting hatred against any group or religion, or any other stupid article, it does not mean that I support them. It just means that it is important for all human beings to know about them. Common sense, which is usually very good among our readers, is good enough to understand that. When, like in the recent articles on drug decriminalization, it is necessary to make it clearer, I add a comment, which in this case was very clear: I support decriminalizing all drugs, as it is stupid to throw depressed and sad people (as only depressed and sad people use drugs) in prison and ruin their life with a criminal record. That does not mean that there is any change to the Message which says clearly that we must not use any drug except for medical purposes. The same applies to the freedom of expression which must be absolute. That does not mean again of course that I agree with anti-Jews, antisemites, racists of any kind or anti-Raelians. But by knowing your enemies or the enemies of your values, you are better equipped to fight them. With love and respect of course, and with the wonderful sentence of the French philosopher Voltaire in mind: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Ethics" is simply a last-gasp attempt by deist conservatives and
orthodox dogmatics to keep humanity in ignorance and obscurantism,
through the well tried fermentation of fear, the fear of science and
new technologies.

There is nothing glorious about what our ancestors call history,
it is simply a succession of mistakes, intolerances and violations.

On the contrary, let us embrace Science and the new technologies
unfettered, for it is these which will liberate mankind from the
myth of god, and free us from our age old fears, from disease,
death and the sweat of labour.
