Genetically-modified lamb with a 'healthy' type of fat naturally found in fish and nuts have been cloned for the first time, by Chinese scientists.

'Peng Peng' was born a month ago at a laboratory in Xinjiang, western China.
He has a gene from a roundworm which makes him produce fat containing high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, as is found in oily fish like salmon.
The gene was first inserted into a donor cell taken from the ear of a small Chinese Merino sheep.
This cell was then inserted in the lab into an unfertilised egg, which was then fertilised and the resultant embryo implanted into the womb of a surrogate sheep.

Dr Yutao Du, of the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) in Shenzhen, southern China, said: "The gene was originally from the C. elegans roundworm which has been shown to increase unsaturated fatty acids, which is very good for human health."

Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to be protective against heart disease and could even boost brainpower.
Du said that BGI was now "ready for the industrial-scale development" of GM sheep.
Du emphasised that the altered lamb would not be making its way on to restaurant plates anytime soon.

"The Chinese government encourages transgenic projects but we need to have better methods and results to prove that transgenic plants and animals are harmless and safe for consumption, that is crucial," he said.
No GM animal has yet been approved for human consumption so far anywhere in the world.
AquaBounty, an American firm, has patented a GM Atlantic salmon that contains a gene from another fish,a Chinook salmon, which makes it grow twice as quickly as natural ones.

The GM fish could be approved by the US's Food and Drugs Administration this summer. If so it would be the first 'transgenic' animal approved by the FDA for human consumption.
Foods made from GM crops, however, are now commonplace in US supermarkets.

as it is stupid to throw depressed and sad people (as only depressed and
sad people use drugs) in prison and ruin their life with a criminal
record. That does not mean that there is any change to the Message which
says clearly that we must not use any drug except for medical purposes.
The same applies to the freedom of expression which must be absolute.
That does not mean again of course that I agree with anti-Jews,
anti-Semites, racists of any kind or anti-Raelians. But by knowing your
enemies or the enemies of your values, you are better equipped to fight
them. With love and respect of course, and with the wonderful sentence
of the French philosopher Voltaire in mind: "I disapprove of what you
say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".

"Ethics" is simply a last-gasp attempt by deist conservatives and
orthodox dogmatics to keep humanity in ignorance and obscurantism,
through the well tried fermentation of fear, the fear of science and
new technologies.
 
There is nothing glorious about what our ancestors call history, 
it is simply a succession of mistakes, intolerances and violations.
 
On the contrary, let us embrace Science and the new technologies
unfettered, for it is these which will liberate mankind from the
myth of god, and free us from our age old fears, from disease,
death and the sweat of labour.
