Regular Jogging Dramatically Increases Life Expectancy

There is a large and growing body of scientific evidence that exercise increases lifespan. This is true for all species of mammal tested including humans.
There are an array of biochemical effects of exercise on cells which tend to promote transcription of genes that protect the cells against oxidative stress.
Regular exercise reduces the likelihood of all the major leading casue of death including heart disease, stroke, and cancer. It also improved muscles strength and neuromuscular conditioning reducing the risk of disability in the aged. Furthermore regular exercise improves brain health and reduces the risk of dementia.
Though there are many types of exercise that have benefit, high intensity aerobic exercise such as running is likely to be the most effective.
To that end, a new analysis of data from the Copenhagen City Heart study shows a dramatic effect of regular jogging on life expectancy.
This study has followed 20,000 men and women who were aged 20 to 93 years in 1976 when the study began.
The jogging subgroup included 1,116 male joggers and 762 female joggers who were compared to the non jogging group.
From the press release:
Results show that in the follow-up period involving a maximum of 35 years, 10,158 deaths were registered among the non-joggers and 122 deaths among the joggers. Analysis showed that risk of death was reduced by 44% for male joggers (age-adjusted hazard ratio 0.56) and 44% for female joggers (age-adjusted hazard ratio 0.56). Furthermore the data showed jogging produced an age adjusted survival benefit of 6.2 years in men and 5.6 years in women.
There was however some evidence of a U-shaped mortality curve; moderate exerice was most beneficial but extreme amounts appeared to increase mortality.

"Ethics" is simply a last-gasp attempt by deist conservatives and
orthodox dogmatics to keep humanity in ignorance and obscurantism,
through the well tried fermentation of fear, the fear of science and
new technologies.
There is nothing glorious about what our ancestors call history,
it is simply a succession of mistakes, intolerances and violations.
On the contrary, let us embrace Science and the new technologies
unfettered, for it is these which will liberate mankind from the
myth of god, and free us from our age old fears, from disease,
death and the sweat of labour.
